»menschlich, menschenfreundlich; gesittet, gebildet«: Das Adjektiv wurde im 17. Jh. aus gleichbed. lat. humanus entlehnt, das mit seiner ursprünglichen Bedeutung »irdisch« zur Sippe von lat. humus »Erde, Erdboden« gehört (vgl. ↑ Humus). – Dazu stellt sich seit dem 16. Jh. das Substantiv Humanität »edle Menschlichkeit, hohe Gesittung«, auch »feine, höhere Bildung«, das aus gleichbed. lat. humanitas entlehnt ist. Das seit dem 18. Jh. bezeugte Substantiv Humanist »Anhänger des Humanismus, Verfechter humanistischer Ideale; Kenner der griechischen und römischen Sprache und Kultur« ist dagegen aus it. umanista (zu it. umano »menschlich« < lat. humanus) entlehnt. Dazu gebildet sind die seit dem 18./19. Jh. gebräuchlichen Humanismus und humanistisch. Sie sind vor allem historische Begriffe und beziehen sich auf jene Bewegung, die die Wiederbelebung des klassischen Altertums und seiner Bildungsideale anstrebte; vgl. hierzu das Kapitel zur Sprachgeschichte Die Fremdwortflut des Humanismus. Das Adjektiv humanitär »menschlich, dem Wohl des Menschen dienend« wurde im 19. Jh. aus gleichbed. frz. humanitaire, einer Bildung zu humanité (< lat. humanitas), entlehnt.
